THE SECOND TURN

Between 359 and 330 million years ago, the ancestral lineage lived across freshwater channels, flood forests, estuaries, tidal flats and oxygen-poor lagoons. This Coastal Threshold was neither a completed conquest of land nor a retreat from it. Internal limb bones thickened to bear weight on the bottom, stabilize objects and permit short movement across exposed ground. Lungs remained essential while skin and throat tissues assisted with gas exchange.

The amphibious interval lasted roughly thirty million years. It changed more than anatomy. In tidal environments, the same place repeatedly becomes another sensory world: submerged, exposed, chemically altered and mechanically transformed. Survival favored relational maps over fixed landmarks, coordinated care over solitary response and an understanding of patterns that remain identifiable while changing state.

As coastal systems fragmented between 330 and 300 million years ago, the wider vaeriform radiation divided into multiple branches. The Vaera branch retained versatile grasping at some cost to pure swimming efficiency. Between 270 and 252 million years ago, the drying interior of Pangaea and the relative continuity of marine food systems pushed this branch toward a second, decisive concentration in the sea. It was not the return of a land mammal to water. The lineage had never completed a permanent departure.

At approximately 252 million years ago, the end-Permian mass extinction brought extreme warming, acidification, oxygen loss and the collapse of marine food webs. Vaera populations contracted into tiny groups within brackish pockets, continental-shelf caves and hydrothermal refuges. The crisis selected for oxygen storage, metabolic suppression and distributed circulatory support. It also left a political memory: a group that owned the location of one refuge could decide who survived.

The interval from 252 to 233.2 million years ago is remembered as the Long Sea. Reproduction, sleep, learning, care and tool use became fully aquatic. Populations remained small and separated. Routes, dangerous layers and seasonal changes were carried in living memory; when an elder died, an entire passage through the world could disappear. The need for external record grew first from the fear of losing a way home.
