Vaera possess no permanent biological sex. Outside reproductive periods, individuals retain the same underlying reproductive state, with no stable male or female anatomy. Sexual function exists within the species, but it is temporary and does not constitute a permanent biological identity.

Reproduction normally requires two individuals. Both contribute genetic material, preserving recombination and variation within the lineage. At the beginning of a reproductive cycle, physiological exchange between compatible individuals initiates a coordinated morphogenetic response. Their subsequent reproductive functions are not predetermined by sex.

One individual develops the structures required to receive and sustain the developing organism. These structures arise through directed morphogenesis from tissues already capable of extensive developmental reorganization. The other individual develops the complementary reproductive structures necessary for genetic transfer. Neither configuration is permanent, and either individual may assume either function during a later reproductive cycle.

Following fertilization, early development occurs internally within the gestational individual. Specialized vascular and protective tissues form around the developing organism and regulate the transfer of nutrients, gases, and metabolic products. These tissues are temporary structures produced specifically for reproduction rather than permanent organs of the adult body.

Embryonic development makes extensive use of the same developmental plasticity observed in adult Vaera, but it remains constrained by inherited biological architecture. Environmental conditions may influence physiological development and later adaptive capacity, but they do not permit arbitrary forms or unrestricted alteration of the developing organism.

A reproductive cycle normally produces a single offspring. Multiple viable offspring from one cycle are uncommon. The comparatively low reproductive rate is offset by prolonged development, extensive parental investment, regenerative capacity, and a high probability of survival after successful maturation.

After reproduction, the temporary reproductive structures are gradually resorbed or reorganized through directed morphogenesis. The gestational and complementary individuals return to the common adult anatomical state. Vaera therefore possess reproductive roles without permanent sexes: sexual function is transient, while the adult organism remains biologically sexless.
